Cross Creek book

The Classic Book on Southern Cooking First published in 1942, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek-- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet. The lobster newburg recipe is worth the price of the book. In 1930, Scribner's accepted two of her stories, "Cracker Chidlings" and "Jacob's Ladder", both about the poor, backcountry Florida residents who were quite similar to her neighbors at Cross Creek. Be the first to ask a question about Cross Creek Cookery Magic and myth, getting real and standing up for what’s right, love and longing, growing up and falling in love. Rawlings has to shoot one of Mr. Martin's pigs, so she becomes in debt to him. Not a quick read, but has some beautiful descriptions especially The Magnolia Tree.

Cross Creek is the warm and delightful memoir about the life of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings—author of The Yearling—in the Florida backcountry. We must hold one another close against the cosmic perils." The Classic Book on Southern Cooking First published in 1942, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek-- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet.

Published in 1942, it is an authentic peek into Florida history and is chock full of autobiographical anecdotes as well as insights into Florida plants and animals, farming, hunting, small-town politics, and the local socioeconomics of the times.

Following are the books for the 2020-2021 season for your reading pleasure. If you absolutely cannot abide the use of the "n" word (which I detest), do not read this book. Despite her Yankee upbringing, Rawlings was a keen observer and recorder; especially of the foodways of her cook.

I believe that some of this was due to her faithfulness in reporting how the locals talked and believed, some of it was due to her own beliefs, and some of it was perhaps due to the era in which she wrote (the book was published in 1942). Enjoyed this book about a Yankee moving to Florida to write and own a Citrus Grove.

Although she seems to have had some strong personal relationships with black people, there seems to be always a veil of judgment between her and them -- an otherness that is hard to read. I did not know much about truth, goodness, and beauty back then, but for some reason this book ‘felt' beautiful to me. One of my all-time favourite memoirs, written by the author of The Yearling. Originally published in 1942, Cross Creek has become a classic in modern American literature.

I still use many of the recipes today. Cross Creek Cookery really gives you a flavor of what life is like in Southern Florida. Rawlings had shot the chickens for dinner because neither she nor her cook could catch any of them! This was a fun read after visiting MKR's home at Cross Creek. My favorite words are the ones she has for Black Bottom Pie: "I hope to be propped up on my dying bed and fed a generous portion. If you haven't read it, you've missed Rawlings' best story.I first read this book when I was in my early twenties.

caught my eye because the cover was so pretty and, being from Florida, it seemed like something I should have read a long time ago. This is a 1942 edition purchased at 'The Julian Book House' in Julian, CA. Even got the Cross Creek Cookery book with incredible recipes from the Old Florida coastal period! Disregarding that aspect (hard to do!)

Far, far more so than can be excused 'for the times.' Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Really a classic look at Southern cooking in 1942 as well as a great sample of this lyrical, humorous author's style.Delish recipies and funny stories all wrapped up into one!

It makes Cross Creek Cookery as much a commentary on life in Florida in the 1930s and 1940s as it is a recipe book.
