Assateague National Seashore compared to Assateague State Park. There seems to be confusion about the 2 places but it it is really quite simple. On the National beach one can have a campfire on the beach, and pets are allowed in non-lifeguard area on a leash. So either we are suckers or this place is pretty great.We went to assateague for the first time the beach is the best white sand, great waves to play in the kids love the boogie board , we went for a long walk and there were many great shells . The beach was not crowed at all for a friday.
The wild horses were really a big hit. I think it is about a 7 hour trip. The National Park is further south on the access road and charges $15 for a 7 day pass or $30 for an annual pass--a bargain. Try to avoid this time frame if possible. But don't feed them though, it's illegal and you could face a fine or even a bite. They are relentless at BOTH parks as are the biting flies. It’s north of Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague. I was wondering if anyone can offer advice as to the advantages of the beaches of the State Park v. National Seashore. that will save you at night if the bugs are bad. We stop on our way down (we leave at 4 am from Many people don't realize that you can have a campfire on the beach at Alas, the traffic seems to be quite a problem. There are no concessions on the National side, and has only cold showers. The national park has cold water and chemical toilets, but pets are allowed. Our best trip was to Assateague State Park. The bathhouse and snack bar/ gift shop is right there next to the beach. We would like to visit I will strongly recommend you bring a very good TICK and Mosquito repellent. Sites have a picnic table and a fire ring. Contact Us.
The wild ponies were beautiful, and there was nothing better than walking right down to the ocean in the morning and being ALONE with just a few ponies. Sites are $30 per night. The wash houses were within walking distance with HOT showers and flushing toilets. You can rent bikes onsite for $6.00 per hour or $20.00 all day. depending on your procilivities, you might want to check alcohol rules in the state park too...not that i think you're wanting to get drunk & rowdy, but i seem to have read that ALL alcohol is currently prohibited in state parks, & sheesh...how uncivilized not to be able to have a glass of wine with dinner!in all seriousness, i would highly recommend buying a screen tent to put around the picnic table. Our group includes Mom and Dad, 3 and 4 year old boys, and very active grandma and grandpa in their 70s. Electric hookups are available in one loop only.
... Assateague State Park v. National Seashore . From the North you can access Assateague Island via Route 611 which is under 10 miles south of Ocean City, Maryland. The kids enjoyed the bike paths and we enjoyed the scenery. 611--about 15 minutes south of MD Rte 50. Worked like a charm! If you love the outer banks, but only want a day trip, then Assateague is the place.It used to be tradition to go camping with my father for Father's Day. The state park offers beach-front camping with no water or sewer hook ups.
