A I loved this book and have posted this to Face Book.I loved this book and have posted this to Face Book.If you've ever sat around wondering about the dismal state of progressive politics in the U.S., the biography of Henry Agard Wallace provides an enlightening walk through 20th century American political history and the New Deal.
That is too bad, as Wallace was an important figure in shaping the philosophy (and not just the praxis ) of the New Deal and carried forward many ideas from Veblen/Patten institutionalism.Absolutely absorbing biography on a fascinating man. Wallace seems like someone the US and the world desperately needs right now; a good, thoughtful, intellectually vigorous person who is dedicated to the common good. This book is a great biography of him. While it is often nice to have direct quotes from Wallace, his supporters and opponents, the authors could have made their points more cogent by judicious trimming.
“A fascist is one whose lust for money or power is combined with such an intensity of intolerance toward those of other races, parties, classes, religions, cultures, regions or nations as to make him ruthless in his use of deceit or violence to attain his ends.” As VP in FDR's third term, he spoke against fascism and the genetic idea of an aryan race. Wallace was a contradiction-a rational man of science who loved statistics and plant biology but also a self-professed mystic whose lifelong search for spiritual meaning lead him to be conned by various charlatans, including fake Indian “medicine men” and Russia emigre prophets producing some truly cringeworthy correspondence that later embarrassed him politically. Drafted to run for president on a new Progressive ticket in '48, Wallace was caught up in the anti- communist rhetoric and the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was a founder of Pioneer Hi-bred, a leader in the development of hybrid corn and the scientific breeding of chickens. “If we define an American fascist as one who in case of conflict puts money and power ahead of human beings, then there are undoubtedly several million fascists in the United States.” Unfortunately, his falling out with the Democratic establishment after being ousted from FDR's ticket in 1944 drove him farther left, becoming an opponent of Truman's Cold War policies and calling for rapprochement with the Soviets, then running on a Progressive Party ticket in 1948 largely backed by Communists and radical leftists. He helped support FDR in the mid west farming areas, and served as the Secretary of Agriculture in the first two of Roosevelt's terms of office -- perhaps the most important Secretary of Agriculture in America's history. Nonetheless, I am so happy to learn of this scientific, passionate, humble liberal genius. He also held two cabinet posts, served four tumultuous years as America's wartime vice president under FDR, and waged a quixotic campaign for president in 1948. Free delivery worldwide on over 20 million titles. The book is a very comprehensive treatment of Wallace's life, derived from primary resources. He is also credited with being the father of the green revolution. His family helped found the Farm Bureau, he pioneered much of the hybrid corn industry and, in fact, was one of the founders of thePioneer Hi-Bred company, he served as Secretary of Agriculture under FDR, and was FDR's Vice President during his third term.I finally finished this long and detailed book, and I now know A LOT about Henry Agard Wallace. Solid biography.Definitely a man ahead of his time that I would not have learned about had I not watched the Oliver Stone documentary on Netflix. The first full biography of Henry A. Wallace, a visionary intellectual and one of this century's most important and controversial figures. At one point, one out of every three eggs eaten was from a chicken descended from one of Henry Wallace's. As FDR's VP in 1940 to 1944, his views on the post war planning are now seen as prophetic on so many fronts, particularly with regard to the Cold War and the Post colonial transition in Europe. It also gave me a good picture of rural early-20th century America that I enjoyed as much as the accounts of Wallace's quixotic political struggles. “The really dangerous American fascist... is the man who wants to do in the United States in an American way what Hitler did in Germany in a Prussian way.
That is too bad, as Wallace was an important figure in shaping the philosophy (and not just the praxis ) of the New Deal and carried forwardA very good one-volume biography that mainly tracks Wallace's political career, though with due acknowledgement of his scientific/agricultural career as well. of Agriculture was disappointingly (& surprisingly) weak, but the rest of the bio more than made up for it. At 540 large, small-typed pages, this was a major investment of time. Be the first to ask a question about American Dreamer Henry Agard Wallace was the 33rd Vice President of the United States (1941–45), the Secretary of Agriculture (1933–40), and the Secretary of Commerce (1945–46).Whose Constitution?
I have blogged a longer appreciation of the book: Henry Wallace was a farmer, a scientist, a genius, an ardent New Dealer, a vice president and a doomed third-party candidate for the highest office. He was amazing. They claim to be super-patriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. He constantly argued for finding wayWhy had I never heard of Henry Wallace? Groves briefed Wallace personally on one occasion. Biographies are one historical genre where straightforward storytelling is still the norm. After reading American Dreamer, I had to soften my outlook slightly and say it is, or was, if only for the truly exceptional and for the briefest of periods.Largely forgotten from history, Henry Wallace, both a deeply religious and scientific thinker, was easily one of the most curious characters to come within a heartbeat of the presidency.
