But Fairbrass and Russo—the latter of whom is good enough, albeit in a mostly thankless role—make you want to stay invested in their respective characters, even when it’s obvious that their stories cannot end well.

Unfortunately, that realization frequently dawned on me as I watched “Villain” since its creators barely developed their antiheroes’ personalities.

Brisk yet flavorful, gritty even when stylish, its occasional plot-logic leap smoothed over by a tone that deftly balances a resigned good humor with violent threat...

A British gangster film where almost every guy looks like they could physically destroy any two guys you know isn't enough to make a winner, but Philip Barantini's "Villain" is something you'll want to see for that and other reasons. With a powerful performance from Fairbrass, VILLAIN is a gritty British thriller which depicts a dark, criminal underworld.

Fairbrass’ commanding performance is not strong enough to rescue grubby kitchen sink scenes featuring Chloe, who is presented as just another problem that Eddie has to take care of, what with her young child, and her predictably abusive boyfriend.But Fairbrass does make you want to care about Eddie, especially when he tries to not beat the snot out of his brother. But Villain feels like twenty-first-century London: racially diverse, divided along class and privilege lines, scared of the young, scared of getting old. Cinemark

Nonetheless, Villain exerts a powerful pull, thanks both to the effective use of gritty East London locations and the terrific lead performance by Craig Fairbrass, displaying his intimidating physical presence and simmering, low-key charisma.
